In the beginning, there was light...

Hello all. Greetings from the cave, my little cubicle in the back of a warehouse in Atlanta, GA, otherwise known as Maze Studios. My name is Ben H. Allen and I make records, not bombs.

This blog will document the adventures of myself, my sidekick Juno the studio wonder dog and my assistant, Robert Gardner.

If you're a techie type and wish to pontificate on the finer points of audio engineering, music production or anything of great import, then please drop a comment and I'll do my best to be conversive.

Cheers!

Lightspeed Champion

So, been working at Mission Sound in Brooklyn, producing the new Lightspeed Champion record with Dev and the boys from Adam Green's band.  As you can see, the secret to great drum sounds is an excellent hat:

Otherwise, I would suggest using a good drummer playing good parts on a good kit in a good room.  Then, and only then, would I worry about microphones, mic pres and compressors.  Amazing what you can do with good ideas and good people!  That said, a vintage 80-series Neve doesn't hurt:

Gibson Guitars was nice enough to lend us a couple of axes for the sessions as well:  an SG classic with P90's, a Les Paul bass, and an Epihone acoustic with a crack extending all the way from the bridge to the heel.  It actually sounds fantastic!

After day #1, we've got one song wrapped up, except for vocals, which we'll be doing in Atlanta in early March.  I'll report back soon!

Welcome to Squarespace!

Welcome to your new Squarespace site!  Below is a video that shows you how to get started using our system.

The three most important things to keep in mind:

  • The buttons in the top right allow you to interact with your site in different ways.  For instance, the 'A' icon represents content mode, which lets you edit journal entries and other content.  The 'Cube' Icon represents structure mode, which lets you add and organize pages.  Each mode is explained if you hover on the icon.

  • You can drag and drop anything on your site.  Want to move a page?  Enter structure mode and drag the page to a new location.  You can even drag pages between columns or from a column on to your top navigation bar.  Need to edit a journal entry?  Enter content mode and click 'Modify' on the entry you'd like to edit.

  • Our styles are presets that you can make your own.  Entering style mode on the upper right will let you edit any color, width, column arrangement, or banner and more.  Most editing is done from the Fonts & Colors tab of the style edtior menu.

Want to remove this entry?  Enter content mode by pressing the 'A' on the upper right, then press 'remove' next to the title of this entry.
